A Phoned-In Podcast by Bill Chalmers

A Winter Requiem

Recorded January 16, 2012 · 57 seconds

When the tundra winds come screaming across the April-clouded skies,
we can hear the piercing agony of winter as she dies.
When the harsh rain-snow is pelting metal roofs by day and night,
we can hear dame winter’s rattle as she, angry, passes away.
When we see melt-tears form rivulets from off fair winter’s cheeks,
we know this beauteous lady soon will find the rest she seeks.
Then the majesty of drifted snow and crystaled ice around
will sink into the grave of spring with one last melting sound.

My dad, Bill Chalmers of Juneau, Alaska, was an English teacher, author, poet, football enthusiast, raconteur... a wonderful, warm, and giving person. Inspired by his locally-legendary answering machine messages, we gave him a phone number he could call to leave a message, a poem, or a story. Each call became an episode of this podcast. He died on September 30th, 2026, and these recordings are just a small refraction of the light that he leaves behind in all of our hearts. –- Devin Chalmers, October 2026
