Early Spring

Recorded January 31, 2012 · 1 minute 26 seconds

Early Spring. Sun on a day at February’s start sends a shiver of premature... Let’s try that again. Early Spring.

Sun on a day at February’s start
sends a shiver of premature warmth to the heart
and a glitter of hope to the Northlander’s eyes
as he cheers each degree of the temperature’s rise.
Relativity doesn’t get much thought up here,
but juxtaposition controls every year.
Days in the fall, thought to be ungodly cold,
now are seen as a sign that spring soon will take hold.
One must live in the frostbelt to know what it means
to these cabined-in folk to see temps in their teens.
But to those who have lived with belows for a while,
any reading above is good cause for a smile,
and cause for the shedding of ear flaps and boots
and for jumpsuits replacing their snowmobile suits.
Oh, we know that spring planting time’s not here just yet,
but it’s never too soon for our springtime mindset.

My dad, Bill Chalmers of Juneau, Alaska, was an English teacher, author, poet, football enthusiast, raconteur... a wonderful, warm, and giving person. Inspired by his locally-legendary answering machine messages, we gave him a phone number he could call to leave a message, a poem, or a story. Each call became an episode of this podcast. He died on September 30th, 2026, and these recordings are just a small refraction of the light that he leaves behind in all of our hearts. –- Devin Chalmers, October 2026
