Grandma’s Rocker

Recorded January 17, 2012 · 1 minute 4 seconds

Grandma’s Rocker. Grandma’s rocker was of... Start again. Grandma’s Rocker.

Grandma’s rocker was of wicker; soft did creak those reading days.
Lap-straddled I, a boy of four, then sailed those page-plied ways.
But wicker was like Grandma, too frail to battle time.
Now both are gone, and both have left a memory in my mind.
I’m building you a rocker with sturdy maple posts
where grandchildren can watch the march of passing legend hosts.
Though maplewood is not as soft as wicker that I knew,
the softness that these young ones need will come, my love, from you.

My dad, Bill Chalmers of Juneau, Alaska, was an English teacher, author, poet, football enthusiast, raconteur... a wonderful, warm, and giving person. Inspired by his locally-legendary answering machine messages, we gave him a phone number he could call to leave a message, a poem, or a story. Each call became an episode of this podcast. He died on September 30th, 2026, and these recordings are just a small refraction of the light that he leaves behind in all of our hearts. –- Devin Chalmers, October 2026
