A Phoned-In Podcast by Bill Chalmers

Wasted Seeds

Recorded January 21, 2012 · 48 seconds

The child I saw the other day from wisdom’s light had turned away,
and when I came to ask him why a mind so bright can truth be shy,
he spoke back with a voice that boredom showed:
“They teach those things I have no need to know.
Those ideas that I’d like to love,
no one will take the time to share or show.”
So he darkly spent his learning days
in dullness, shadowed from truth’s warming rays.
Had we but taken time to feel his needs,
what gardens might have blossomed from those seeds?

My dad, Bill Chalmers of Juneau, Alaska, was an English teacher, author, poet, football enthusiast, raconteur... a wonderful, warm, and giving person. Inspired by his locally-legendary answering machine messages, we gave him a phone number he could call to leave a message, a poem, or a story. Each call became an episode of this podcast. He died on September 30th, 2026, and these recordings are just a small refraction of the light that he leaves behind in all of our hearts. –- Devin Chalmers, October 2026
